Third Times the Charm for ‘Marvel Zombies’!

psychosylum | Zombie Comics | Friday, 06 June 2008

Source: http://www.fearnet.com/

Marvel ZombiesWhat do you get when you combine the best (or at least most coherent) superhero universe in comics history with a race of mindless, flesh-eating monsters? Duh! Marvel Zombies! This weekend at Wizard World Philadelphia we talked to Marvel talent consultant C.B. Cybulski, who gave us some good news about the popular horror-tinged Marvel series.

“We’re planning on issuing Marvel Zombies 3,” said Cybulski, “which is by Fred Van Lente and Kev Walker. “It’s a series we have where the zombie universe is going to be coming into the Marvel universe. And there’s a new creative team for that. Prior, it was Robert Kirkman and Sean Phillips, and they were too busy, so Fred and Kev came on board. If you can’t quite remember, the overriding plot or premise of the original series was that almost all super-powered beings on Earth have become flesh-eating zombies after being infected by an alien virus.

If that doesn’t sound incredible to you than you need to get new ears. Or maybe just have them chewed off by a zombified Hulk…

MARVEL ZOMBIES 2 – Issue #4 of 5

marvel zombies 2MARVEL ZOMBIES 2 – Issue #4 of 5
Marvel Comics
Written by Robert Kirkman Art by Sean Phillips

The afterburners are on full blast as we get one book closer to the end. Can the Marvel Zombie menace be stopped? Will Black Panther save the day? Can Hawkeye learn to live with metal boobs? All these questions are answered, and poor Hawkeye shows just how weak he can be in a world of menacing superhero zombies. I was extremely pleased to see the Phoenix snap out of it, and step up to show she’s one of the most powerful beings around because throughout this whole series, I wasn’t buying it. I still don’t buy the zombie virus was able to infect Luke Cage either, but I guess I’m not gonna win them all. Robert Kirkman is writing fresh again, keeping this series alive and interesting, but also forcing Marvel Comics to think about more Marvel Zombies in the future. As long as Sean Philips continues to dazzle us with his grotesque but yummy good pencils, I’m all for it. Heck, here’s an idea, and feel free to steal it, Cup o Joe: Continue on with what you hinted in that Army of Darkness crossover and make them backup stories or something to more Marvel Zombie craziness! I’ll bark at the moon to that! Either way, for folks that love their horror and their superheroes, this series is a must read. It’s like peanut butter and jelly with Danny O’ Bannon spreading trashy fun on your piece of Wonder Bread

ResurrectionIn the tradition of such timeless science fiction films like THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL and WAR OF THE WORLDS, RESURRECTION is the story of an alien race come to conquer. But while those classic tales focus on the invasion, RESURRECTION starts when those stories end. After years of conflict the aliens are gone and the planet is safe… or is it? Who ended the war? How did they do it? Where do we go from here? Written by Marc Guggenheim (WOLVERINE) and drawn by David Dumeer, RESURRECTION uncovers both the secrets of humanity’s survival and its impending future.

Zombie comic hits shelves

psychosylum | Zombie Comics | Friday, 07 December 2007

zombie callingFor as long as she can remember, Faith Erin Hicks has loved comic books.

“When I was a kid, I really wanted to be a journalist like Tintin,” she said, referring to the popular European comic-book character, created before the Second World War.

When she grew a little older, Hicks began to read more mature comic books, such as Bone.

“I enjoy the medium. It’s a wonderful combination of visual art and the written word,” Hicks said.

Now, it’s the Halifax-based artist’s turn to be the inspiration. Hicks released her first comic book, Zombies Calling, last month. The book focuses on the adventures of three university students who try to survive an invasion of zombies using rules from zombie movies when their campus is overrun.

“I enjoy the medium,” she said. “It’s a wonderful combination of visual and the written word.”

Despite her life-long love of comics, Hicks didn’t consider a career as a comic-book artist right away.

In addition to her love of comic books, Hicks is also interested in animation. After studying animation at Sheridan College in Toronto, she got a job with Halifax-based Copernicus Studios. She also spent five years writing an online comic strip, Demonology 101, which she estimated would total more than 700 pages of material if printed.

Hicks said there was something satisfying about holding the end result of her hard work in her hands when her first comic book, Zombies Calling was printed.

“That’s very gratifying,” she said.

Hicks said the book, which was released last weekend, had several sources. In addition to zombie movies, such as 28 Days Later and Night of the Living Dead, Hicks also drew on her own school experiences.

“I went through university and college, and I have my giant student loan to deal with,” said Hicks. “I guess it was a good forum to rant about that.”

She also hasn’t rule out the possibility of a Zombies Calling sequel.

“I’m not sure - it’s a contained story,” Hicks said. “But at the same time, I really loved doing it.”

Living with the dead

Living With the Dead #2, from Dark Horse, is out this week at your favorite local comic shop. It’s a funny three part series about two poor un-undead guys, Straw and Whip, surrounded by the living dead. It’s written by Mask creator Mike Richardson, with art by Ben Stenbeck and awesome covers by underground illustrator Richard Corben (Hellboy: Makoma, Heavy Metal). A quick description from the TFAW website:

Two survivors of a global catastrophe disguise themselves as corpses to survive in a land of the walking dead.

Soon the two friends save a lovely young gun-crazy woman named Betty, who becomes a source of rivalry between them. With hundreds of zombies out for a snack, the three try their best to blend in so as not become the next item on the menu.

LWTD #3 will be out in December, with the trade collection following in January.

SPORKS, GIRLS & GUTS: HICKS TALKS “ZOMBIES CALLING”

psychosylum | Zombie Comics | Friday, 16 November 2007

Zombies CallingReally, there’s just no stopping the undead these days, with the zombie plague continuing to spread everywhere from terrifying movies like “28 Days Later” or the hilarious “Shaun of the Dead” to numerous comics including the runaway Robert Kirkman hits “Walking Dead” and “Marvel Zomies.”

You can add another graphic novel to the list. “Zombies Calling” is a 104-page graphic novel and the first to be released by newcomer Faith Erin Hicks through SLG Publishing. The story follows three university students who’re trapped in their school due to an invasion of the undead and have to fight their way out using only their knowledge of zombie films. As the story is set in Canada, there are no guns available with which to fight the zombies. Additionally, the heroes aren’t athletic types, meaning they’ve no potentially lethal cricket bats lying around. Instead, the students are forced to use kitchen utensils like sporks, which, Hicks told CBR News, can be deadly in the right hands.

Though a new face in the printed comics world, the Nova Scotia-based Faith Hicks works in a Canadian animation studio and has created more than 900 pages of Webcomics, one of which, “Ice,” was nominated for a Joe Shuster Award.

“Zombies Calling” is a book filled with respect for zombies, but at the same time skewers the genre in a very novel way. With the graphic novel shipping to comics stores this week, CBR News caught up with Hicks to learn more about the inspiration for “Zombies Calling” as well as her Webcomics background.
